This competition challenges students to design their own mission before pitching their business proposals to a panel of investors in a Dragons Den style presentation.
The KlesserSense project is a proposal by the IOSM team from Cranfield University for the UKSEDS In-Orbit Servicing & Manufacturing Competition.
Its core mission is to ideate and potentially build a compact and intelligent module capable of detecting, classifying, and monitoring micro-debris in Low Earth Orbit.
The motivation for this project is to address the significant safety and sustainability risk posed by the debris environment, specifically the estimated 130 million fragments between 1 mm and 1 cm, and the 1 million debris objects between 1 cm and 10 cm, which current ground-based systems struggle to track.
KlesserSense is designed as a compact module compatible with CubeSat and IOSM platforms. It is intended to operate in coordination with its host satellite, providing precise, continuous debris monitoring.
The module's architecture integrates a microwave radar module for detection and analysis , and critically, a combination of a low range LiDAR, a mini camera, and LED illumination.
This optical subsystem is essential for short-range distance measurements and enabling visual classification of debris when possible, supporting the overall goals of debris mapping, risk prediction, and classification of materials.
All students passionate about aerospace, RF systems and CAD modelling are strongly encouraged to join the team, alongside those with expertise in business modeling and market analysis.
