CranSEDS is launching a new Electric Propulsion Team this year, focused on designing, building, and testing a budget-friendly Hall Effect Thruster using argon or krypton. The goal is to achieve 5 mN of thrust, with the potential to optimise the design to 10 mN when using krypton.
Each subsystem will undergo individual bench testing to verify functionality and compatibility with the overall system. Once subsystem testing is complete, the full HET assembly will be integrated and prepared for thrust testing in the vacuum chamber. Experimental testing will be conducted in Cranfield University’s vacuum chamber. The primary goal is to measure thrust, voltage, current, mass flow, and other parameters to determine the performance of the overall HET and its subsystems.
On top of which, this project aims to establish a technical foundation for the Electric Propulsion Team within CranSEDS. The project’s documentation will include detailed design drawings, computational analysis, component selection justifications, experimental procedures, and lessons learned from each development phase.
